Does oil pulling actually work?
Written By: Alaina Yan
With the influence of social media, specifically TikTok, oil pulling has become the newest “health” trend. Throughout the history of TikTok trends, from dangerous pranks to clique storytelling, following TikTok Trends has never been the wisest decision.
Oil pulling is the act of swishing natural oils, such as coconut and sesame oil, in your mouth. While many influencers promise their audience oil pulling is the healthiest, most effective method to maintain their dental hygiene, studies have proven that oil pulling should not be considered an alternative to daily brushing.
Practitioners and studies have proven that while oil pulling is capable of decreasing harmful bacteria in the mouth, it is unable to draw toxins out from your blood. In the mouth, there is a mix of healthy and harmful bacteria. Without proper hygienic practices, the bacteria in your mouth still create a thin layer of biofilm, called plaque. An excessive amount of plaque can lead to a plethora of dental issues: bad breath, gingivitis, cavities, and even root canals.
Due to the lack of extensive research on oil pulling, the American Dental Association (ADA) does not recommend it. While oil pulling could potentially boost oral hygiene, it should be utilized alongside regular brushing and flossing.
The Bottom Line
Although Tiktok influencers have pushed oil pulling onto viewers and followers, studies have proven that, while somewhat effective, it is not as effective as influencers claim it to be. So next time you watch and fret over a video outlandishly claiming that another absurd product is the next best thing for your health, close your phone and stick to the worn, traditional way.
